Philippine Jobless Rate Dips to 4.7% in April, Marking Continued Improvement

The Philippines saw its unemployment rate fall to 4.7% in April, continuing a trend of gradual improvement in the labor market. The figure represents a decline from the previous month's 4.9% and is significantly lower than the 5.7% recorded in the same period last year.

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) attributed the drop to sustained economic growth and increased job opportunities across various sectors. Services, industry, and agriculture all contributed to the rise in employment, with the labor force participation rate holding steady.

"The decline in unemployment reflects the resilience of the Philippine economy and the effectiveness of government policies aimed at creating more jobs," a NEDA official said. The government continues to prioritize investments in infrastructure, digitalization, and skills training to further reduce joblessness.

Despite the positive numbers, challenges remain, including underemployment and the need for more quality jobs. The underemployment rate was at 12.9% in April, indicating that many workers are seeking additional hours or better-paying positions.

Economic analysts expect the unemployment rate to continue its downward trajectory as the economy expands, propelled by consumer spending and government projects. The upcoming elections and holiday season are also seen as potential boosters for temporary employment.
