Philippines' eGovPH App Restored After Overwhelming User Surge Causes Two-Day Outage

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government's eGovPH mobile application has resumed full operations after a two-day service disruption, with officials attributing the outage to an unprecedented surge in user activity rather than any security breach.

Access to the app was restored on Friday following maintenance and feature updates implemented on April 13. During the downtime, users were unable to create accounts, log in, or access the platform's extensive government services.

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary David Almirol Jr. clarified that the interruption resulted from an "overwhelming" volume of simultaneous transactions on the platform, not from hacking or data compromise incidents.

"We have resolved the issue. We just need to expand our servers to ensure this will not happen again," Almirol stated.

The undersecretary noted that eGovPH currently serves more than 40 million users, highlighting the platform's rapid adoption since its launch. The app functions as a centralized digital portal for numerous national and local government services, including digital travel declarations and access to multiple identification documents.

This restoration comes as the government continues to expand the app's capabilities, with recent additions including online driver's license renewals and plans to incorporate National Bureau of Investigation clearance processing and Metro Rail Transit payment solutions.

The DICT emphasized that user data remained secure throughout the service interruption and that the technical team is implementing server expansions to accommodate growing demand for digital government services.
