Pro-Israel donors and political action committees have shattered campaign spending records in Kentucky's Republican primary, pouring millions into an effort to defeat U.S. Representative Thomas Massie, a frequent critic of both former President Donald Trump and Israel policy.
The race has become a national flashpoint, with outside groups outspending local campaigns by a wide margin. Massie, known for his libertarian leanings and independent voting record, has drawn the ire of establishment Republicans and pro-Israel advocates due to his opposition to foreign aid packages and his vote against resolutions supporting Israel.
"This is unprecedented spending for a House primary in Kentucky," said a campaign finance expert. "The money is flooding in from super PACs and dark money groups, mostly targeting Massie's voting record on Israel."
Massie has defended his positions, arguing that U.S. foreign policy should prioritize American interests. "I vote based on the Constitution and what's best for my district," Massie said in a recent interview. "I won't be bullied by special interests."
His opponents, backed by the spending spree, argue that Massie's stances are out of step with the party and endanger national security. The primary election is expected to be one of the most expensive in state history.
