A friendly football match between Ireland and Qatar was disrupted on Tuesday evening when pro-Palestinian protesters stormed the pitch, forcing a temporary halt to the game. The demonstration was aimed at highlighting upcoming matches involving the Israeli national team, which protesters claim should be canceled or boycotted.
Around the 20th minute, several activists ran onto the field carrying Palestinian flags and banners reading "Sportswashing" and "Stop the genocide." Security personnel quickly intervened, and the match resumed after a 10-minute delay. The incident occurred amid growing tensions over Israel's participation in international sports events while the conflict in Gaza continues.
Irish organizers had previously faced calls to cancel the match against Qatar—a nation with its own human rights controversies—but opted to proceed. However, the protest has reignited debate over whether the upcoming Israel-Ireland fixture should go ahead.
"This dispute is only going to heat up," said a spokesperson for the Irish Palestine Solidarity Campaign. "We will continue to pressure football authorities to take a stand against enabling war crimes."
Ireland is scheduled to play Israel in a qualifying match next month. UEFA has not commented on potential security concerns or the possibility of venue changes.
