Prosecution to Present Case in Ex-DUP Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson Sex Abuse Trial

The prosecution is set to open its case in the trial of former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, who faces 18 charges including rape and multiple counts of indecent assault and gross indecency. The 63-year-old has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which allegedly occurred between 1985 and 2008 and involve two victims.

The trial at Newry Crown Court resumed on Wednesday after being adjourned until 14:00 BST. A jury was sworn in on Tuesday, with the judge indicating the trial is expected to last three to four weeks.

Sir Jeffrey's wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, faces a trial of the facts on related aiding and abetting charges, which she has denied. She was declared unfit for a conventional trial on mental health grounds and will not participate in proceedings.

The couple were arrested at their County Down home and charged in March 2024. Sir Jeffrey resigned as DUP leader the following day and did not contest his Lagan Valley seat in the subsequent general election.
