Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood Reveals He Wanted to Give 'House of Cards' a Punk Makeover

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has disclosed that he once advocated for a radical rearrangement of one of the band's most beloved tracks. In a candid interview with Mojo Magazine, Greenwood pinpointed 'House of Cards' from the 2007 album In Rainbows as the song he wished to transform.

"There are songs I feel like we could have better arrangements for, but everyone else seems to like. I was convinced that 'House of Cards' should sound like an Iggy Pop track," Greenwood revealed.

The guitarist explained he pushed for a more aggressive, punk-inspired sound during the recording sessions, contrasting sharply with the track's final, atmospheric form. However, Greenwood expressed retrospective acceptance of the creative decision, acknowledging the band's collective vision.

"But I can accept that it would probably have killed something beautiful and tender," he added, reflecting on the track's enduring delicate quality that might have been lost.

Beyond this revelation, Greenwood also shared his enthusiasm about Radiohead's recent return to touring after a seven-year hiatus. He described the experience as "incredible," praising the band's streamlined and collaborative dynamic.

"You hear of other bands getting together and having multiple managers and multiple sound people. We seem very blessed," Greenwood remarked. The 2025 tour featured the band performing in the round with a rotating setlist of approximately 65 songs each night.
