Resident Evil Reboot: Zach Cregger to Tell a New Story Set During the Events of RE2

Zach Cregger, the director of the upcoming Resident Evil film reboot, has revealed that the movie will follow a new protagonist operating on the periphery of the events of Resident Evil 2. In a recent interview, Cregger explained his decision to step away from the series' iconic lead, Leon S. Kennedy, while still honoring the pacing and atmosphere of the beloved game.

"We're not centering the story on Leon," Cregger said. "Instead, we're introducing a character who exists on the edges of that world, experiencing the Raccoon City outbreak from a different perspective. This allows us to capture the essence of the games—the tension, the survival horror—without being tied to established lore."

The filmmaker emphasized that his goal is to respect the source material's tone while offering something fresh for both longtime fans and newcomers. The reboot is expected to begin production later this year.
