Rethinking Garden Watering in an Era of Drought and Bans

With weather patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable and summer hose bans now a regular occurrence, it may be time to reconsider how we care for our gardens. Plants can adapt to drier conditions if given the chance.

Last week, a representative from Thames Water visited to inform us that our household was exceeding the average water usage. I explained that we have young children, which means constant laundry and baths are a necessity. We don't wash a car or use a hose in the garden.

The visitor left us with a small hourglass attached to a suction pad. Now, each morning, my husband and I compete to see who can finish showering, brushing teeth, washing hair, and conditioning in under four minutes. This simple tool has transformed our daily routine and made us more conscious of water consumption.

As climate change alters rainfall patterns, perhaps it's time to let our gardens become more resilient to drought rather than relying on constant watering.
