Rigorous Drop Test Reveals the Best Suitcases for UK Travelers in 2025

A suitcase is the unsung hero of travel, enduring countless knocks and scrapes while we refresh ourselves on the road. From cobblestone streets to baggage carousels, our luggage faces constant abuse. To help you find a trusty companion, we tested eight suitcases to the limit—dropping them repeatedly from a ladder to simulate baggage handler mishandling.

According to a Gatwick worker interviewed by the Guardian, handlers load about 150 bags in 40 minutes per flight, so rough treatment is inevitable. Sita reports over 36 million mishandled bags globally in 2023. Fortunately, many modern suitcases use durable polycarbonates, like those in safety goggles. But durability isn't everything—style, organization, and ease of maneuverability also matter.

How We Tested

Each suitcase was filled and dropped multiple times from a ladder. Some sustained damage, others showed only scuffs. We also assessed everyday functionality: packing, wheeling, handle quality, and locks. Review units in saleable condition were donated to the Cat Action Trust 1977.
