San Antonio Spurs lock down Victor Wembanyama with record $252 million max extension

Victor Wembanyama has committed his future to the San Antonio Spurs, signing a five-year, $252 million (£188 million) maximum rookie scale extension, according to ESPN. The deal, which runs through the 2030-31 season, includes a player option on the fifth year.

The 22-year-old French center, who stands 7ft 4in, chose not to include escalator clauses that could have increased the total value, a move that gives the Spurs greater salary-cap flexibility. "Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes," Wembanyama posted on social media before the agreement was announced.

Selected first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has already made a massive impact. Last season, he led the Spurs to the NBA Finals, where they fell 4-1 to the New York Knicks. He became the youngest player ever to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, receiving all 100 first-place votes. He also led the league with 3.1 blocks per game while averaging career highs of 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists over 64 regular-season games in the 2025-26 campaign.

The two-time All-Star helped France win a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
