SAP has introduced a new certification for Generative AI developers that breaks from traditional exam formats. Instead of a monitored, multiple-choice test, candidates now complete real-world tasks using any resources—including Google, ChatGPT, and SAP documentation.

The shift reflects a move toward practical, project-based assessment. "In the real world, nobody tells you not to search or use tools. You're expected to solve the problem," explains the course description. "This exam finally reflects that. You're not answering questions. You're doing tasks."

Under the old system, certifications relied on memorization and proctored exams. The new approach removes those controls entirely, allowing candidates to access any information they need. The exam evaluates not just knowledge but problem-solving approach, task breakdown, and ability to move from idea to working output.

SAP emphasizes that this is not an easier path. Access to information is now universal, so the differentiator becomes how candidates tackle problems. The certification is designed for developers working with SAP's AI tools, including Joule and enterprise agents.
