Selena Gomez Steps Behind the Camera: Directorial Debut Marks Magical Farewell to Wizards Franchise

Selena Gomez is adding a new title to her already impressive resumé: director. The multi-talented star, who first captured hearts as Alex Russo in the original Wizards of Waverly Place, will make her directorial debut in the upcoming third and final season of the revival series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.

Gomez, 33, announced the milestone on Instagram, sharing a photo of a script that read "Directed by Selena Gomez" and expressing her excitement about joining the Directors Guild of America. In her post, she reflected on the significance of this new chapter, stating she was "so grateful for an opportunity to have a say in the goodbye to the Russos."

This directorial venture comes as the series prepares to conclude after its third season. The show's storyline took a dramatic turn in the Season 2 finale, revealing Gomez's character, Alex Russo, as the mother of Billie Russo (played by Janice LeAnn Brown) and showing Alex sacrificing herself to protect her daughter from evil forces.

According to Variety, the final season will follow Billie as she discovers that rescuing her mother requires reuniting with her long-lost father. The Russo family must band together, combining their magical powers to defeat the darkness threatening them all.

For Gomez, this project represents a full-circle moment. Before the revival premiered in 2024, she acknowledged the original series' impact on her career, telling People, "This is what gave me everything that I have today, and I'll never forget that this is where I started."

Her return to the Wizards universe—now as both star and director—marks a poignant conclusion to a franchise that launched her career nearly two decades ago.
