Sheinelle Jones Celebrates Birthday with Tears and Gratitude in First Year Without Husband

Sheinelle Jones marked her 48th birthday with a poignant mix of emotions, sharing an intimate glimpse into her grief journey following the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh, last year. The Today show co-host posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, revealing she couldn't stop crying as she navigated this milestone without her partner.

"Today is my 48th birthday, and to be honest—I can't stop crying," Jones wrote from an airplane while touring for her new book Through Mom's Eyes. "Thankful tears, painful tears because it's my first without Uche, and tears full of gratitude reflecting on the last 7 days. I have never felt so much love in my life."

Ojeh passed away in May 2025 at age 45 after battling brain cancer, leaving behind Jones and their three children: 16-year-old Kayin and 13-year-old twins Clara and Uche Jr. Despite her public persona, Jones has been transparent about the ongoing challenges of grief, describing it as "swimming through mud" in a recent interview.

"People see me on TV and they think 'Oh, she's better,'" she told People in January. "It's like, 'Oh, no no. I'm not better.' Every day, it's like swimming through mud. Even just to do normal things, to get up and brush your teeth, go to work, have the kids go to school, get dinner on the table, whatever it is, doing that when you're grieving is very difficult."

Jones emphasized that she's learning to hold both grief and joy simultaneously, stating, "I recognize that I hold two things: I hold my grief and I also hold this joy. I said it months ago, and I'll say it now: I am fighting for my joy."

Her book tour has become a source of that joy, with sold-out crowds in every city. Her children recently surprised her during a Today show segment with flowers and heartfelt words of support. "Words can't even describe it," said her son Kayin. "I'm so happy for you, Mom. You've worked on this since quarantine. We've had the ups and downs. We've obviously gone through so much, and I'm so happy for you."

In her birthday tribute, Jones honored her late husband's memory with a nod to his love for The Beatles, writing, "Uche loved The Beatles; as I mark the beginning of '48,' I do... feel the sun. Thank you so so much."
