Newly released video from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) captures the horrifying moment a UPS cargo plane lost its engine during takeoff in Louisville, Kentucky, before crashing and killing 15 people.
The footage, made public Tuesday, shows the aircraft speeding down the runway and beginning its climb. Suddenly, an explosion rips the left engine from the wing, sending it tumbling to the ground. The plane continues briefly before disappearing from frame; earlier video had shown it crashing behind a tire store shortly after.
According to the NTSB, investigators have identified a cracked part in the structure connecting the engine to the wing as a key factor in the incident. The plane, a UPS cargo jet bound for Hawaii, went down in November, resulting in the deaths of all 15 aboard.
The NTSB continues to investigate the cause of the catastrophic failure.
