Sibley’s Gritty Century Puts Surrey in Command Against Sussex

Dom Sibley’s unbeaten 116 anchored Surrey to 292-2 on day two of the County Championship clash at The Oval, leaving the hosts within 66 runs of Sussex’s first-innings total and firmly in control.

Sibley, who has now scored his sixth first-class hundred since the start of the 2025 season, spent six hours at the crease facing 268 balls, displaying the trademark patience and concentration that once earned him Test recognition for England. His partnership with Rory Burns (77) yielded 148 runs for the first wicket, and he then added 109 with Ryan Patel (67 off 82 balls) to dismantle Sussex’s bowling attack.

Sussex, who declared at 358-9 on day one thanks to centuries from Jack Carson and Ollie Robinson, were left to rue two costly dropped catches. Patel was reprieved on 11 when wicketkeeper John Simpson missed a regulation edge, and Ollie Pope was put down at third slip on 11 off Robinson’s bowling. At stumps, Pope was unbeaten on 14 alongside Sibley.

Sibley’s vigil was not entirely untroubled — he edged Robinson just short of the slips on 42 and survived a testing spell from Tom Clark just before lunch — but he rarely looked in serious danger. With Surrey only 66 behind and eight wickets in hand, they are well placed to push for a match-winning lead on day three.

“Sibley’s hunger for runs is undimmed,” said a Surrey spokesperson. “He’s been a rock for us all season.”

Sibley is now just nine runs shy of 10,000 first-class runs, further strengthening his case for an England recall five years after his last Test appearance.
