Sierra Acquires YC-Backed Fragment in Third AI Startup Purchase This Year

Sierra, the AI-powered customer service platform co-founded by veteran technologist Bret Taylor, has acquired French startup Fragment, a Y Combinator-backed company that helps businesses embed AI into their workflows.

Announced Thursday, the deal marks Sierra's third public acquisition in recent months. Earlier this year, the company bought Japan's Opera Tech and voice agent startup Receptive AI. Fragment's co-founders, Olivier Moindrot and Guillaume Genthial, will join Sierra's team.

In a blog post, Taylor and co-founder Clay Bavor noted that Moindrot and Genthial bring "valuable strength" to Sierra's agent development efforts in France. Financial terms were not disclosed, though PitchBook estimates Fragment raised around $2 million in seed funding.

Sierra, which counts Casper, Clear, and Brex among its clients, has raised over $630 million from investors including Sequoia and Benchmark at a $10 billion valuation. Taylor, who also chairs OpenAI's board, launched the startup after stepping down as co-CEO of Salesforce in early 2023.
