Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital after feeling unwell at Old Trafford shortly before Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday, though sources stress it was a precautionary move and not an emergency.
The 84-year-old former Manchester United manager, who led the club for 27 trophy-laden years, typically watches matches from the directors' box. He was admitted to hospital as a precaution, and no further update on his condition has been provided.
Ferguson suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2018 that left him critically ill, and he later spoke in detail about his recovery in 2021. On Sunday, he was seen with guests at the stadium a couple of hours before kick-off.
Consultant cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra posted a photo on X of himself with Ferguson before the game, calling it "a privilege, honour and dream come true."
Ferguson was taken by ambulance from the tunnel area of Old Trafford. Club officials are optimistic he will be well enough to return home soon.
After United's 3-2 victory, head coach Michael Carrick, who played under Ferguson after joining from Tottenham in 2006, said: "I wish him all the best. Hopefully when he hears about the result it will give him a good boost."
