Liverpool manager Arne Slot has dismissed suggestions that his players gave up during their recent 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City, while acknowledging the team has grown accustomed to dealing with negativity this season.
Captain Virgil van Dijk had publicly criticized his teammates after the heavy loss at the Etihad Stadium, stating, "You shouldn't give up and that's maybe, at a certain point, what happened." The defeat marked Liverpool's 15th loss across all competitions this campaign.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, Slot offered a nuanced response to his captain's comments.
"I didn't see players giving up, but I also think it is good from a captain that he has a strong and firm reaction," Slot said during Tuesday's press conference in Paris. "This year we have been quite experienced in terms of negativity. This was a big one because it was an FA Cup quarter-final. It was a big loss against our rivals."
The Dutch manager issued a stark warning about the consequences of repeating their Manchester City performance against the reigning European champions.
"I can tell you if we have the 20 minutes we had at City tomorrow evening here, we will again concede four goals," Slot emphasized. "So it is a challenge for us to be from the first to the last second at the level we were at in the first 35 minutes [against City]."
Despite last season's Premier League triumph in Slot's debut campaign, Liverpool now face a critical juncture in their season. The team must secure Champions League qualification for next season either by winning the competition this year or finishing in the Premier League's top four.
German midfielder Florian Wirtz expressed confidence in the manager's leadership despite the recent setbacks.
"Yes, of course we are believing in the manager," Wirtz stated. "The team should believe in the manager because they won the league last season, we had a lot of good games this season. We wanted it to be better but we still have things to play for."
When questioned about handling the mounting pressure and salvaging the season, Slot pointed to Liverpool's historical resilience.
"The answer is already in the history of Liverpool," Slot asserted. "This group has shown many times that they have comeback after setbacks and this club has shown it many many times over the years. My team has shown many times in big games that we are able to compete with the best teams in Europe."
The stage is set for a crucial European encounter at the Parc des Princes, where Liverpool must demonstrate the fighting spirit their manager insists they still possess.
