“Volatility is the real story here,” said Shye Gilad, a former airline captain and current business school professor. “Right now, the airlines are trying to make bets on what they think will happen in the future.”
Oil prices have swung wildly in recent weeks, briefly exceeding $119 per barrel before dropping below $95 on news of a temporary ceasefire, only to climb back toward $100 as uncertainty grew. This unpredictability makes it challenging for airlines to forecast and adjust their operations effectively.
Industry leaders are sounding the alarm on the financial impact. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian noted that higher fuel prices could add $2 billion in operating expenses for the second quarter alone, prompting the airline to raise checked baggage fees. Similarly, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby warned that sustained elevated fuel costs might result in an additional $11 billion in annual expenses, a figure that surpasses the carrier’s best-ever annual profit.

Experts caution that relief may not come quickly, even if oil prices drop temporarily, as airlines remain cautious in a highly unstable market.
