Sofia Mattsson is trading one iconic soap opera for another, bringing her daytime drama expertise from Port Charles to Salem. The actress, who recently departed General Hospital after a seven-year run, has officially joined the cast of Days of Our Lives, marking an exciting new chapter in her career.
In an exclusive interview with People, Mattsson opened up about the transition, describing her new role as "very complex and interesting." She expressed enthusiasm for the fast-paced world of daytime television, noting, "It’s such a fun challenge as an actress since it’s so incredibly fast paced and always very high stakes circumstances."
Despite her experience, Mattsson admitted to initial nerves about joining the long-running series. "I was a bit nervous for sure," she confessed, "but having been on General Hospital helped ease a lot of worries, as I’m already very familiar with the concept and structure of a daytime show."
Mattsson's journey on General Hospital began in 2018 when she joined as Sasha Gilmore, daughter of established characters Holly Sutton and Robert Scorpio. What started as a brief recurring role evolved into a seven-season storyline that surprised even the actress herself.
"I started off thinking it would be just a few episodes on recurring status, so I definitely did not think I’d stay so long," Mattsson told TV Insider last summer. "But I will say it’s gone by incredibly quickly. From the start, I’ve seen every day as a challenge and opportunity to grow as an actress, and honestly, that mindset never stopped. I feel like I learned something new every day until the end!"
The Swedish actress announced her move to Days of Our Lives via Instagram earlier this year, surprising fans who had followed her General Hospital journey. While details about her new character remain under wraps, Mattsson has already found her footing in Salem.
"It’s been wonderful," she shared. "Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. It’s a really happy vibe. And the talent is amazing, both cast and crew."
Mattsson sees the transition as an expansion of her daytime television family. "I already felt like I had a daytime family at General Hospital," she reflected, "and I’m feeling so grateful to expand that family to now include the whole Days of Our Lives team as well."
The actress's character, Sasha Gilmore, departed General Hospital last summer, leaving Port Charles for Paris in a storyline that provided closure for fans while opening the door for Mattsson's next adventure in daytime drama.
