SpaceX Rocket Debris Leaves Mark on Moon's Surface

The Moon's surface has been left with a new crater after a part of a SpaceX rocket crashed into it on Wednesday. According to the Korean AeroSpace Administration (KASA), the lunar orbiter Danubri captured images of the Moon's surface before and after the impact.

The rocket debris, which was traveling at a speed of approximately 5,400mph, struck the Moon's surface, creating a short but dramatic flash that would have been nearly impossible to catch with amateur telescopes.

Concerns About Space Debris Grow

The incident has raised concerns about the growing amount of space debris in Earth's orbit. As Matt Bothwell, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge, pointed out, 'Space is getting more and more crowded' due to the increasing number of launches every year.

'It could feasibly be within a few decades that it's actually quite hard to get past Earth's orbit because space is so crowded,' Bothwell warned.

The empty upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket, which weighs around 4,000kg, had been drifting in a long, looping orbit since January last year. Astronomers tracking the rocket part eventually determined that it was on a collision course with the Moon, gaining speed every day.

SpaceX's Response and Future Plans

SpaceX has stated that the impact was not intentional and that the company is moving forward with its plans. The same booster section from the January 2025 mission is scheduled to launch on its 18th flight on August 10, aiming to deploy 29 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit.

As the space industry continues to grow, the need for responsible management of space debris becomes increasingly important to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of future space missions.
