Spain Calls for Release of Gaza Flotilla Activist Held by Israel

Spain has formally demanded that Israel release one of its citizens, Saif Abukeshek, who was taken into Israeli custody after naval forces raided the Global Sumid Flotilla near the coast of Greece. The flotilla, organized by pro-Palestinian activists, was attempting to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Abukeshek, a crew member, was among several individuals detained during the operation. Spanish authorities confirmed they have lodged a formal request for his immediate release, citing international law and the need for diplomatic resolution.

Israel stated that the flotilla was illegally attempting to breach the naval blockade, which it enforces to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas. Activists, however, argue that the blockade constitutes collective punishment and restricts essential supplies to the Gaza Strip.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over the legality of Israel's maritime restrictions and the treatment of international activists. Spain's demand underscores growing European scrutiny of Israeli actions in the region.
