JJ Spaun staged a dramatic final-round comeback to win the weather-disrupted Texas Open, edging out Scotland's Robert MacIntyre by a single stroke.
Spaun fired a closing 67 to finish at 17-under par, claiming his third PGA Tour victory and his second at this San Antonio event. The win comes just days before the season's first major, the Masters, begins at Augusta National.
MacIntyre, who held a one-shot lead entering Sunday after a storm-suspended third round, carded a 70 to finish tied for second at 16-under alongside England's Matt Wallace and American Michael Kim. The Scot needed a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff but missed a lengthy putt after an errant approach shot.
"This game is so crazy," Spaun told reporters. "I've not been at the form I wanted... It means a lot to come back and win here at a place that's been so good to me. I put less pressure on myself this week, and sticking to that mantra really helped."
The tournament schedule was thrown into chaos by Saturday's storms, forcing MacIntyre to play 30 holes on Sunday. After bogeying the 18th to end his third round with a 72, he battled inconsistency in the final round, mixing birdies with immediate bogeys.
Spaun seized his opportunity with a blistering back-nine charge, carding three birdies and a crucial eagle on the driveable par-4 17th. MacIntyre matched that eagle to keep his hopes alive, but couldn't find the magic needed on the final hole.
Both players now turn their attention to Augusta National, where the Masters begins on Thursday. For Spaun, it's a triumphant boost of confidence. For MacIntyre, it's a near-miss that leaves him seeking his third PGA Tour win at the season's most prestigious event.
