Spencer Returns to Boost Bath for Champions Cup Semi-Final Clash with Bordeaux

Bath's first-choice scrum-half Ben Spencer has recovered from a shoulder injury and will start in Sunday's Champions Cup semi-final against holders Bordeaux-Begles. Spencer, who last played in April's quarter-final win over Northampton, returns just in time to fill a critical gap after Bernard van der Linde underwent ankle surgery, leaving teenager Isaac Mears as the only other scrum-half option.

However, Bath will be without centre Max Ojomoh and wing Joe Cokanasiga due to knee and leg injuries respectively. With Cameron Redpath also sidelined, Louie Hennessey moves to outside centre and Ollie Lawrence shifts to inside centre. Will Muir retains his wing spot, while Henry Arundell switches to the right wing.

Arundell will face a stern test against Bordeaux's prolific winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey, who has scored 28 tries in 26 games this season. The hosts also boast France's all-time leading try-scorer Damien Penaud at outside centre, with Matthieu Jalibert and Finn Russell set to duel at fly-half.

In the front row, Bordeaux's first-choice loose-head Jefferson Poirot is suspended, giving Bath's Thomas du Toit an opportunity to target replacement Matis Perchaud. The home side will rely on the physical presence of 23-stone Ben Tameifuna off the bench.

Bath are contesting their first European semi-final in 20 years, having lost a tryless encounter with Biarritz 18-9 in 2006. The winner of this match will face either Toulon or Leinster in the final on 23 May at Bilbao's San Mamés stadium.
