Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc. has abruptly ceased operations after a last-ditch government bailout collapsed, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and marking one of the largest airline failures in U.S. history.
The ultra-low-cost carrier, long struggling with mounting debt and soaring fuel prices, had pinned its hopes on a federal rescue package negotiated with the White House. However, the deal fell through late Tuesday, triggering an immediate shutdown of all flights.
"This is an unprecedented crisis for the airline industry," said George Ferguson, senior aerospace and airlines analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. "Spirit's business model was already fragile, and without the bailout, there was no path forward."
The shutdown has created chaos at airports nationwide, with Spirit passengers scrambling to rebook on other carriers. Major airlines including American, Delta, and United have announced capped fares and waivers for stranded travelers, but availability remains limited.
The collapse has reignited debate over federal intervention in private industry, with critics arguing that Spirit's failure was inevitable after years of mismanagement and cutthroat pricing.
