Budget carrier Spirit Airlines has shut down with immediate effect, canceling all flights and leaving approximately 17,000 employees jobless. The airline issued a statement confirming that customer service is no longer available, urging affected passengers to seek refunds through their payment providers or travel insurance.
NBC's Kathy Park reported on Saturday TODAY that the shutdown came unexpectedly, catching travelers off guard. Passengers at airports across the country found themselves scrambling to make alternate arrangements.
"Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations. Here's what travelers need to know: check with your credit card company or travel insurance provider about refunds, and explore options with other carriers," Park said.
The abrupt closure marks the end of one of America's largest ultra-low-cost carriers, which had been struggling financially amid rising fuel costs and stiff competition.
