Spirit Airlines announced late Friday that it is winding down operations and canceling all flights effective immediately, marking the end of the ultra-low-cost carrier's three-decade run.
In a statement, the airline expressed “great disappointment” over the decision, which comes as it begins a complete shutdown of global service. All booked flights are canceled, and customer support is no longer available.
Passengers who paid with a credit or debit card will receive automatic refunds to their original payment method. However, Spirit will not assist travelers in finding alternative flights on other airlines.
The budget carrier reflected on its legacy, noting pride in how its low-cost model disrupted the industry. The company had hoped to continue flying for years to come, but said that chapter is now closing.
Other airlines have stepped in to help affected travelers. American Airlines announced rescue fares in Main Cabin on select routes for Spirit customers, and travelers flooded social media seeking assistance.
