Spotify now allows artists to tag tracks that use generative AI, and DistroKid has integrated the feature. The new tagging system lets musicians disclose AI involvement in their music, but questions remain whether this transparency is sufficient for the industry's evolving needs.

Andrew Southworth, a music marketing expert, highlighted the update in a recent video, noting that artists can now indicate AI-generated elements when distributing through DistroKid. However, he questioned whether the labeling goes far enough to address concerns about authenticity and copyright in the age of AI music.

Some artists worry that partial AI use—such as generating a melody with Suno or completing a song from a simple prompt—might not be fully captured by the tagging system. The feature currently offers a binary choice, but creative workflows often involve a blend of human and AI contributions.

As generative AI tools become more prevalent, platforms like Spotify are under pressure to balance innovation with artist and listener trust. The new tagging is a step forward, but many in the music community are calling for more detailed disclosures and clearer guidelines.
