Sprint Showdown Looms: Asher-Smith and Alfred Target Commonwealth Glory in Glasgow

British record holder Dina Asher-Smith and Olympic champion Julien Alfred are poised to headline the sprint events at this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

With just 100 days remaining until the Games commence on July 23, the stage is set for a thrilling clash at Scotstoun Stadium. England's Asher-Smith, a decorated athlete with world and European titles, aims to secure her first individual Commonwealth gold medal.

The 30-year-old sprinter, who holds British records in the 60m, 100m, and 200m, could reignite her rivalry with Saint Lucia's Alfred. Alfred arrives in Glasgow fresh from her Paris 2024 Olympic triumph, where she claimed 100m gold and 200m silver.

"I'm really excited and I'm definitely aiming to compete at both the Europeans and the Commonwealth Games, mainly because it's going to be so much fun," said Asher-Smith. "You are going to see a lot of talented athletes come out and perform, from all across the world. From the Caribbean nations to the African nations and all across the Commonwealth, I think there are going to be some incredible performances."

Alfred, who secured 100m silver at the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, views the Glasgow event as a crucial milestone in her career.

"The Commonwealth title is very much one I would like to add as I try to build a legacy so that when I do one day step away from the track, people will say I accomplished everything I possibly could," Alfred stated.

The Glasgow Games promise a showcase of global sprinting talent, with both athletes highlighting the diverse competition expected from across the Commonwealth nations.
