Trekkies may have yet another reason to fear for their wallets because Star Trek: The Original Seriesis getting a new box set. This 60th anniversary edition will be released on Sept. 8.

There are three versions of the upcoming release: a DVD set for $101.99, a base Blu-ray set for $104.99, and an Amazon Exclusive Edition for $139.99. All three contain the show’s full 79-episode run remastered in 1080p with enhanced visuals and original audio. They also come with over nine hours of special features.

As for what’s included in the Amazon collector’s edition, it has a 4-inch vinyl with the show’s original theme, limited-edition lobby cards, and snazzy new packaging.

However, not everyone is enthused about this classic sci-fi show’s latest release. The set currently has a 2.7 rating on Amazon, with negative reviews noting that this new version includes less than the previous anniversary set. Ten years ago, the series received a collection for its 50th anniversary that included the original show, the first six movies, and Star Trek: The Animated Seriesfor $208.99. While that’s more expensive than the 60th anniversary release, some wish the previous offer had been brought back.Others are annoyed that this is yet another 1080p release instead of a 4K upscale.

Overall, Star Trek fans have been inundated with tough news as of late. The series has gone from several actively airing shows down to two — Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy — both of which are coming to an end relatively soon. Star Trek: Lower Decks ended with its fifth season in 2024, while Prodigy and Discovery also came to a close that year. The straight-to-streaming film Star Trek: Section 31 received brutal reviews from critics and fans alike (24% on Rotten Tomatoes from the former and 15% from the latter) when it hit Paramount Plus on Jan. 24, 2025.

Besides the final two seasons of Strange New Worlds (season 4 willair on July 23) and Starfleet Academy’s last season, coming out in 2027, there aren’t any upcoming Star Trek shows or movies that have been fully announced.

After years in development hell, the fourth Star Trek film starring Chris Pine as Kirk was scrapped in favor of an as-yet-unnamedmovie from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Needless to say, with Paramount under new management, the series’ future is up in the air.

Which is too bad, because DS9 is an amazing series and has some of the best writing and acting from that era of Star Trek. But, even though I hate we will probably never see a remaster like TNG got, I also kinda agree with them that the interest probably isn't there for them to turn a profit on the whole thing. So here we are. 2026-07-09 16:25:25 Upvote Downvote Reply Copy
