SteelAsia to Build Philippines' Largest Solar Rooftop at Cebu Plant

MANILA, Philippines – SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the country's flagship steel producer, has partnered with Buskowitz Energy to install an 8-megawatt peak solar rooftop system at its Compostela mill in Cebu—the largest single-roof solar installation in the nation's heavy industrial sector.

The project, which will cover approximately 65,560 square meters of rooftop, is expected to supply about a quarter of the plant's electricity needs once completed in November. It will utilize 12,888 solar panels and 54 inverters, generating around 12,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually and cutting carbon emissions by an estimated 8,400 metric tons per year.

Buskowitz Energy will handle engineering, procurement, construction, operations, maintenance, and asset management for the facility.

“For decades, renewable energy from hydroelectric and geothermal sources have been a key component of how SteelAsia operates its mills, and we have recently been adding solar into the mix for its practicality,” said SteelAsia executive vice chair Andre Sy.

This marks SteelAsia's second mill to install solar panels, with plans to roll out similar projects across other plants as part of a broader push to integrate renewable energy amid war-driven volatility in energy and fuel prices. SteelAsia currently produces over 2.4 million metric tons of rebar annually.
