Six-time Olympic medalist Sunisa Lee has announced her return to gymnastics after a two-year break. The 23-year-old American, who won team gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics along with bronze in the all-around and uneven bars, revealed her comeback in an Instagram video with the caption "I'm back."
In the video, Lee said: "I know what I'm capable of. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Back in the gym. We'll see." The clip ends with the words: "This is more than a comeback, stay tuned."
Lee's last competition was the 2024 Olympics. Her return comes two years before the Los Angeles 2028 Games. She previously won all-around gold, team silver, and uneven bars bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Last year, Lee spoke about dealing with health issues, including a chronic kidney disease diagnosed in 2023, as well as depression and self-doubt between the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. She noted that without daily training, her body was feeling good.
Fellow American gymnast Jade Carey, who also won medals in both Tokyo and Paris, recently returned after a similar break. Seven-time Olympic champion Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast of all time, has not competed since Paris and has expressed uncertainty about competing in LA.
