Swim Deep unveil the romantic new single 'Mud' from upcoming album 'Hum'

Swim Deep have released a new single, 'Mud', a soaring and romantic track that offers another glimpse of their forthcoming fifth studio album, 'Hum', due out on June 19 via Submarine Cat Records.

Frontman Austin Williams explained that the song was born from relaxed jam sessions at their label's studio. "We would meet up and jam with no real pressure or goal, just friends playing music together," he said. "The chorus came to me, and I immediately thought it was too good for it to be an original thought—like seeing a magic trick and being told it's actually magic, no trick."

Williams added: "With all the other things going on in our lives, I often forget that the one constant thing is the love I have for my wife every day. This song is about that."

Produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, who also worked on Swim Deep's 2024 record 'There's A Big Star Outside', 'Mud' features a slow, grungy stomp. Guitarist J.J. Buchanan revealed that the outro was a challenge: "It was a three-month-long battle where we all tried to steer the ship in the same direction—a Teenage Fanclub 'The Concept'-inspired instrumental—but via different routes. Luckily, captain Bill stepped up and got us out of the storm unscathed."

In a recent interview, the band described 'Hum' as a journey, with each song evolving. Ryder-Jones noted that while there was still work to be done, the album was heading in the right direction. Williams summed up the album's themes as "live, loss, love," inspired by the birth of his daughter and the death of his wife's father.
