Tan France surprised fans by trading his signature silver hair for a dark brown look, but the change is temporary and for a specific reason. The Queer Eye fashion stylist debuted the dramatic transformation in an April 29 Instagram video, explaining that the new 'do was for a role—though he didn't disclose the project.
"Don't freak out—I know my hair is dark," France said. "It's very weird to see me with dark hair. It's weird to see myself with dark hair."
He added that he hadn't planned to address the change, but after being spotted in public, he wanted to clarify: "This is not a midlife crisis." France also reassured fans that he hasn't permanently abandoned his salt-and-pepper locks, saying, "I hate dark hair on me."
"I love my silver hair," he affirmed. "I'm really proud of my grays." The Next in Fashion host noted he expects to return to his natural color within a month or two.
Queer Eye costar Antoni Porowski joked in the comments, "My brain is glitching so hard rn," to which France replied, "Mine has been for days now."
France has been open about his early graying, telling The Guardian in 2021 that he started going gray at 12. He has experimented with different styles over the years but has always kept the silver hue. Last year, he ditched his iconic quiff for a shorter cut after online criticism, saying the old style made him seem "uptight."
