Teenager Emily Cassap earns first senior Northern Ireland call-up for World Cup qualifiers

Former England youth international Emily Cassap has been called up to the Northern Ireland senior women's squad for the first time. The 19-year-old, who can play in midfield or defence, is included for June's World Cup qualifiers against Turkey and Switzerland.

Cassap changed her allegiance to Northern Ireland earlier this year and has already represented the country at Under-19 level. She helped England finish second at the Under-17 Women's European Championship in 2024 and spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough from Sunderland.

She is one of five changes made by manager Michael McArdle. Cliftonville defender Fi Morgan returns for the first time since 2023, while Glentoran midfielder Mia Moore is also back. Goalkeeper Maddy Harvey-Clifford replaces the injured Abbie Smith, and Kelsie Burrows keeps her place after a late call-up for April's double-header with Malta.

Versatile wide player Caragh Hamilton and experienced centre-back Laura Rafferty are ruled out through injury.

Northern Ireland travel to Turkey on Friday, 5 June, before hosting Switzerland on 9 June in their final group game. McArdle's side have already secured a play-off spot after their two wins over Malta but will aim to retain their place in League B.

"Some of the changes are enforced," McArdle said. "It's that stage of the season when leagues are coming to an end and if players have been carrying something during the season it can be a bit more difficult to manage at that point."

He added that competition for places is "exciting" and a "positive consequence of the transition we're in. With a transition it brings opportunity and new faces, and that naturally brings competition. That's what we all want, and the players want it too, we all want the strongest squad we can possibly have."
