Fatal Shooting Rocks Thailand
A devastating shooting at a school in Thailand has left eight people dead and 22 injured. The incident has prompted the country's prime minister to vow stricter gun control laws.
The 14-year-old shooter, a student at Debsirin School in Nonthaburi, first killed his grandparents before traveling to school, where he murdered five teachers and then took his own life. The gun used in the attack belonged to the teen's grandfather and was legally registered.
Gun Laws Under Scrutiny
Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with approximately 10.3 million firearms in circulation, of which around four million are believed to be owned illegally. Despite having strict gun laws that punish illegal possession with up to 10 years in jail, enforcement has been a significant issue.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged to introduce new legislation that restricts the carrying of firearms in public, allowing only government officials on duty to carry guns. This move comes as the country grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy and seeks to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting, having found videos related to school shootings in the US on the teenager's devices. The attacker's family members have described him as quiet and well-behaved, with no indication that he was planning the attack. His uncle noted that the teenager spent most of his time indoors playing violent video games and rarely went outside.
The Debsirin School, one of Thailand's top secondary schools, has been left reeling from the incident. The school counts many prominent Thai figures among its alumni, including diplomats, athletes, and prime ministers.
A Call for Action
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's vow to introduce stricter gun laws is seen as a step towards addressing the country's gun ownership issues. As Thailand mourns the loss of life, the focus turns to preventing such tragedies from occurring again.
