For a few short years, a $399 portable device could run nearly any modern game. In 2022, Valve's Steam Deck made PC gaming truly portable and affordable. I played through most of Elden Ring on one. But that era is now over. Valve has announced a significant price increase for the Steam Deck, citing rising component costs and supply chain pressures. The base model now starts at $529, a 32% jump. This move signals the end of the golden age of handheld gaming, where powerful, affordable devices flooded the market. The Steam Deck's price hike, along with similar increases from competitors like the ASUS ROG Ally, means that the dream of a cheap, all-in-one portable gaming rig is fading. Enthusiasts will still buy these devices, but the mainstream boom is already cooling.
