The Onion has struck a deal to take over Infowars, the conspiracy-driven media outlet founded by Alex Jones. Under the agreement, which is pending court approval, The Onion will pay $81,000 per month for a six-month renewable license to operate Infowars.com.

The licensing deal, announced on April 20, 2026, comes after a previous $1.75 million cash acquisition bid was rejected by a Texas bankruptcy judge in December 2024. The new arrangement is administered by court-appointed bankruptcy trustee Gregory Milligan.

Comedian Tim Heidecker has been named creative director, with Mia DiPasquale serving as head of programming. The Onion plans to relaunch the domain as a hub for internet-native comedy.

Crucially, the deal ensures that the Sandy Hook families—who won a $1.4 billion defamation judgment against Jones in 2022—will finally receive compensation. Onion CEO Ben Collins remarked, "Eight years after those parents first filed suit, they will finally get some justice and some money."

The transition marks a dramatic shift for the Infowars brand, which has been mired in bankruptcy proceedings following Jones's legal battles over his false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
