In a recent interview on Cryptid Creator Corner, acclaimed comics creator Tim Probert discussed the origins and evolution of his award-winning graphic novel series Lightfall, particularly its latest installment, A Place Between.
Probert shared how the series began as a Nickelodeon short before transforming into a full-fledged graphic novel. His visual inspirations range from the landscapes of Upstate New York and Iceland to the classic Dinotopia books. The characters Bea and Cad were developed as contrasting personalities—one anxious, one carefree—with Probert using black tendrils to visually represent anxiety.
The narrative has evolved to grow alongside its readers, tackling deeper themes with each volume. Probert also reflected on creating during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing it as a period of both escapism and burnout. He highlighted the symbolism embedded in the series covers, which track the changing relationships between the characters.
