A tragic incident unfolded in Tokyo's Toshima Ward on Tuesday, when a mother allegedly strangled her third-grade daughter and then attempted to take her own life.
According to police, emergency services received a call around 12:50 p.m. reporting a suicide attempt at an apartment in Minami-Otsuka. Officers arriving at the scene found a mother and her daughter, aged 8, inside the residence. The mother was semi-conscious but managed to tell police she had strangled the child.
The daughter was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be self-inflicted.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident. The mother's condition is not considered life-threatening, and she will be questioned once her health permits.
