Top Democrats Pressure Swalwell to Abandon California Governor Bid Amid Allegations

Prominent Democratic leaders are urging Congressman Eric Swalwell to withdraw from the California governor's race following serious allegations from a former staffer.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reportedly spoken directly with Swalwell, encouraging him to step aside so that the accusations can be thoroughly investigated without political interference. Senator Adam Schiff has publicly rescinded his previous endorsement, stating on social media that Swalwell should exit the race.

"There is no place in our country or the Democratic Party for those who abuse women and girls," wrote Congressman Robert Garcia. "Congressman Swalwell must leave the Governor’s race immediately."

Arizona Representative Ruben Gallego has also withdrawn his support, expressing regret for his earlier endorsement of Swalwell's campaign.

The political pressure comes as Swalwell's campaign faces significant turmoil. According to reports, multiple staff members have resigned, and major labor organizations that previously backed the congressman have withdrawn their support, leaving key endorsements available in what was already a competitive race.

The controversy stems from allegations made by a former staffer who spoke anonymously to CNN. The woman claims that in 2024, after going to a bar with Swalwell, she blacked out and later recalled a moment when the congressman was on top of her. She alleges she attempted to push him away and tell him to stop, but he continued.

Swalwell has categorically denied the accusations, but the political fallout has been swift and substantial. The congressman recently canceled a scheduled town hall event as the controversy continues to unfold.
