Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Gary Mabbutt has voiced his hope that Ben Davies will remain with the club beyond this summer, following Spurs' Premier League survival.
Davies, who turns 33, is out of contract next month and has not featured since suffering a serious ankle injury in January. Mabbutt believes the Wales skipper's long service and reliability warrant a new deal.
"Ben's a great lad," Mabbutt said. "What he has given to the club so far… it was just so unfortunate the injury. It was devastating for him and for us because Ben's a player you can always rely on. Certainly I hope something will be done with his contract, whether on the playing side or looking more to the future, but hopefully still with Tottenham."
Davies has made over 350 appearances for Spurs since joining from Swansea City. The club triggered a one-year extension last summer, but no decision has been announced for the coming season. Tottenham have been linked with free-agent left-back Andy Robertson, who played his final game for Liverpool on Sunday.
Mabbutt, a FA Cup and UEFA Cup winner with Spurs, stressed the need for significant squad investment after the team secured top-flight status on the final day with a win over Everton. "We have to bring in a number of big players to change the squad," he told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.
