Tracking Bosnia's Brown Bears Through Europe's Ancient Forest

Deep in the Sutjeska National Park of southeast Bosnia lies Perućica, one of Europe's oldest primeval forests. A guided walk here offers encounters not just with ancient trees, but with the elusive brown bear.

Our guide, Dejan Elez, a Bosnian Serb law graduate turned mountain guide, knows the forest intimately. "I know this bear. He knows me. We've met several times," he says, pointing to a wooden signpost scarred by claw marks. "Bears are the sharks of the land, with the keenest sense of smell. They're highly intelligent and know friend from foe."

Elez recounts a chilling encounter: a hunter who came to kill had his face torn off by a bear. But his tales also span history, from the fierce 1943 battle here where Yugoslav partisans broke a German encirclement under cover of a storm, to the ancient rhythms of the wildwood where wolves, chamois, and bears still roam.

This is not just a hike; it's a journey into a living relic of Europe's natural heritage, guided by a storyteller who brings the wilderness to life.
