Tragedy Strikes Melbourne Comic Con: Pedestrian Killed in Vehicle Rampage

A fatal incident unfolded in Melbourne's Ascot Vale suburb on Saturday evening, leaving one pedestrian dead and another critically injured after a vehicle mounted a curb and struck two individuals. Victoria Police confirmed the collision occurred around 5:00 PM local time on Langs Road, just outside the Melbourne Showgrounds, which was hosting the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event.

"One pedestrian died at the scene and the second was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries," stated police authorities, who have since arrested a male driver. The suspect's grey Toyota showed visible damage and was cordoned off by investigators.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy revealed to local media that an off-duty officer, with assistance from bystanders, apprehended the driver after the vehicle reportedly U-turned and stalled. While the exact circumstances remain unclear, McEvoy emphasized that police are exploring all possibilities, including potential impairment from drugs or alcohol.

Eyewitness Tom described hearing "a screech" before seeing the car mount the curb "at an erratic speed." He claimed to have prevented the driver from fleeing the scene. The tragedy cast a shadow over the pop culture convention, which had drawn thousands of attendees expecting appearances from celebrities like Andy Serkis and Bonnie Wright. Authorities continue their investigation into what caused the vehicle to veer onto the pedestrian pathway.
