Tragedy Strikes Shakira Concert Preparations as Stage Worker Killed in Accident

A construction worker died while helping to build the stage for Shakira's upcoming free concert on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach, organizers confirmed.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon, April 26, during assembly of the stage for the event scheduled for Saturday, May 2. The victim, whose identity has not been released, sustained severe crushing injuries to his lower limbs when a lifting system malfunctioned, according to the state fire brigade (CBMERJ).

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the worker died at the hospital despite efforts to save him. "First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital," the event organizers said in a translated statement on Instagram.

"At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim's family," the statement added.

Military personnel from the ambulance service of the Third Maritime Group began pre-hospital care before transporting the victim to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, where death was confirmed.

The concert, titled 'Todo Mundo No Rio', is a major event that attracts millions of tourists. Previous headliners have included Lady Gaga and Madonna. Shakira is set to perform a free show as part of the series.

This is not the first time Shakira's tour has faced stage-related issues. Last year, she postponed a show in Medellín due to safety concerns and rescheduled a performance in Lima after hospitalization. She also experienced a fall onstage and later canceled a WorldPride appearance and a Houston show.

The tragedy comes as Shakira prepares to expand her 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' tour with select US arena dates this summer.
