A horrifying incident in New York City has left a seven-month-old infant dead after she was caught in the crossfire of a suspected gang shooting while sitting in her stroller. The brazen attack took place in broad daylight in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage captured two men speeding on a motorcycle against the flow of traffic. The passenger on the back of the bike suddenly brandished a firearm, discharging at least two shots toward a street corner where several adults and children had gathered on Wednesday afternoon.
The gunfire sent bystanders scrambling for safety. The infant's parents rushed into a nearby storefront to take cover. It was only then, inside the shop, that the devastating reality set in. Witness Bernius Maldonado described a heartbreaking scene, recounting how the mother began screaming in sheer panic upon discovering her child was bleeding from the head.
First responders arrived shortly after receiving emergency calls at 1:21 p.m. local time. The severely injured baby was rushed to Woodhull Hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that no other individuals were injured during the shooting.
Police have made significant progress in tracking down the attackers. Shortly after fleeing the scene, the suspects crashed their moped into a vehicle. Commissioner Tisch noted that the impact was so severe that the suspected shooter was thrown from the bike, landing so hard he lost both of his shoes.
The injured suspect was transported to Brooklyn Hospital by ambulance, where he was subsequently taken into police custody—initially as part of an unrelated investigation. Investigators stated he closely matches the physical and clothing description of the gunman seen in the footage. However, a massive manhunt remains active for the driver of the motorcycle, who managed to escape the crash site.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community and reignited outrage over urban gun violence.
"A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant," stated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, calling the event a devastating reminder of the urgent need to combat gun violence across the city.
"As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them," Commissioner Tisch added. "It is unspeakable."
At this time, formal charges directly related to the shooting have not yet been filed.
