The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner, a celebration of press freedom, took place recently with US President Donald Trump in attendance. The event, which was initially cancelled due to a shooting three months ago, saw Trump take swipes at the media, accusing many journalists of having 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.
A Mixed Tone
Trump's remarks were a mix of cordiality and criticism. At times, he was conciliatory, joking and praising the media, saying he respects 'most of them'. However, his tone shifted as he aimed barbs at the 'fake news' and launched personal attacks on several journalists and Democratic politicians.
A Call for Respect
Despite the tense moments, Trump called on Americans to respect freedom of speech, stating, 'We settle our differences not with bullets, but with open and vigorous debate.' He also appeared to be in a good mood, jokingly telling the media that 'sometimes I really do think that some of you don't like me'.
Relations Remain Fraught
The gala dinner took place amid strained relations between the White House and the media. Last week, Trump threatened to revoke the licences of several US networks that did not carry his primetime speech about election security. The event was considerably scaled down from the first correspondents' dinner, with about 700 people in attendance, and security was tighter due to the previous shooting incident.
Looking Ahead
The outgoing WHCA head announced that the event would return to the Washington Hilton next year. The officer who was shot at the scene, Victor Gonzalez of the US Secret Service, was given an award by Trump for his actions on the night of the shooting. As the night drew to a close, Trump joked that the news industry would 'be broke' after he is no longer in office and even hinted at a potential 2028 presidential run.
