The Georgia Republican primary elections on Tuesday produced a mixed bag for former President Donald Trump, whose influence has been a central theme of this year's midterm campaigns. While some of his endorsed candidates secured victories, others faced defeats, highlighting the limits of his sway over the party base.
In the race for governor, incumbent Brian Kemp, whom Trump has targeted for refusing to overturn the 2020 election results, won his primary against a Trump-backed challenger. However, in the secretary of state race, Trump's preferred candidate, Representative Jody Hice, lost to incumbent Brad Raffensperger, who also drew Trump's ire for certifying the 2020 election.
Trump's endorsed candidate for the U.S. Senate, Herschel Walker, easily won his primary, while in the attorney general race, Trump's pick John Gordon lost to incumbent Chris Carr.
The results underscore the complex dynamics within the Republican Party, where Trump remains a powerful but not omnipotent force. Voters appeared to weigh local issues and incumbency alongside the former president's endorsements.
