At least three students were killed and seven others wounded after two students opened fire at a high school in Tacloban, a city on Leyte island in the central Philippines, police said Monday.
The shooting occurred around 9 a.m. (01:00 GMT) at San Jose National High School. Police arrested one suspect, a minor and Grade 9 student, shortly after the incident, while the other surrendered to authorities later.
Tacloban police chief Noelito Getigan told reporters that the suspects used a .38-caliber revolver and a 9mm pistol. The victims were taken to nearby medical facilities, and additional police were deployed to the school to ensure safety.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered an immediate investigation. "The President is saddened by the incident," his office said in a statement, adding that he directed authorities to ensure security in all areas, especially schools.
The Department of Education condemned the violence and expressed grave concern, calling it a "high alert situation." Authorities urged the public not to spread unverified information and to cooperate with investigators.
School shootings are rare in the Philippines. The last major incident occurred in July 2022, when a gunman opened fire at a graduation ceremony at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, killing three people.
