Twins Lavinia and Michelle, who recently celebrated their 49th birthday, were stunned to discover a DNA test result that is believed to be unprecedented in the UK: they have different fathers. The sisters, who share the same birthday and a lifelong bond, initially took the test to explore their family history. Instead, it upended everything they knew.
“It’s super weird, super odd, super rare,” Lavinia said, describing the revelation. The phenomenon, known as heteropaternal superfecundation, occurs when a woman releases two eggs in the same menstrual cycle, and each is fertilized by sperm from different men. While documented in animals and occasionally in humans, it is extremely unusual.
Despite the shock, the twins say their relationship remains unchanged. “I’ve been really blessed to go through this journey with someone else,” Michelle reflected. For them, being twins is still a defining and cherished part of their identity.
